10 Free Things to Do in March in the Twin Cities

10 Free Things to Do in March in the Twin Cities

1) Free maple syrup programs

Finding a fun, family maple syrup program that’s as FREE-flowing as the sap from Minnesota maples in March is not easy. We’ve found, however, a couple sweet options in the Twin Cities.

Eastman Nature Center, Maple Grove
Learn about the history of maple syruping and get a taste of it, too. Sunday in March thru 3/24/19, 1-4.

Maple Sugaring   Pond-Dakota Mission Park, Bloomington
Indoor and outdoor activities for all ages. 3/10/19, drop-in program, 2-4 pm. FREE.

It’s Tapping Time!   Harriet Alexander Nature Center, Roseville
A FREE event, volunteers welcome. 3/23/19 & 3/24/19, 10am-4pm.

2) St Patrick’s Day parades

St. Paul’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Rice Park, 12pm) & Minneapolis’ 50 Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Marquette Ave, 6:30pm).

3) Have you made your way to the brand new Bell Museum yet? Here’s a chance to get a FREE taste of the new planetarium – and explore the night sky with the aid of pros and a telescope on the museum’s outdoor observation deck. The program is recommended for families with kids ages 7 & up. Reservations are required. March 15, 8-9:30pm.

4) MPLS Winter Skate, treats you to a view of the downtown skyline. The rink offers free skating, a warming house and also has free skates to loan on a first come-first served basis. This is your last chance for outdoor skating this season; the ice melts away on March 10. Open Mon-Fri: 3-9pm, Sat: 9-9 & Sun: 10-6.

5) Spring at Como Zoo & Conservatory

A trip to the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory can instantly lift the spirits in those first few fickle weeks of spring in Minnesota. Here’s what you can catch blooming in the month of March – the cost is only what you choose to donate:

6) Rock the Cradle  Minneapolis Institute of Art

The Current’s annual music & arts festival for the 8-and-under set, arrives on the scene March 24, 11am.

7) Kids Weekend  Cabelas, Rogers

Come for the free activities: a fishpond, crafts, giveaways and a kids workshop. March 2, 12-5pm & March 3, 12-4pm.

8) Free Ink Day  Highpoint Center for Printmaking, Minneapolis

Free Ink Day is a program hosted three times annually at Highpoint Center for Printmaking. It’s the perfect way for an interested person of any age to dabble in printmaking without committing to a full class. Activities are open to all ages, but most kids 5 & under will need a significant amount of help with the printmaking tools.  3/23/19, 1-4pm.

9) Start the Music: Spirited Strings  Ordway Center

Introduce kids to the three members of the string instrument family: the violin, viola and cello as they spin a version of the classic  story, The Three Bears. Designed for kids ages 3–6 and their families. Join in crafts, games and activities, followed by a 30-minute concert. March 16, concerts at 9:15 & 10:30am.
