Fat Bikes:

Did you know that Split Rock Lighthouse State Park has winter "fat bike" trails? They now groom 8 miles for fat tires, both inland and along the shore. On the other hand GOOSEBERRY FALLS IS NOT OPEN FOR FAT TIRE BIKING IN THE WINTER. If you are interested in biking, please drive a little farther up the shore and enjoy the trails at our neighboring park. Thank you!

Trail Detour:

The Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) is detoured along the Gitchi-Gami State Trail between the Visitor Center at Gooseberry Falls State Park and the Split Rock River Wayside. For current trail conditions, check the SHT website or call the park office.

Electric Vehicle charging station

Through a partnership with MNDOT and our local utility (Cooperative Light & Power), an electric vehicle charging station has been installed at our main Visitor Center parking lot. This is a Clipper Creek 120 v. station with 2 cables, and it is free to use. Interactive map of charging station locations.

Gitchi-Gami State Trail Access

The 2.5 mile segment of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail that runs through the park is now paved and ready for use - it's great for biking! The trail connects our lower picnic area to the rest of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail along Highway 61, so there is now continuous paved trail from Gooseberry to the town of Silver Bay, with access to the Gooseberry Visitor Center, campground and the shores of Lake Superior.

Parking is available at our lower picnic area lot, which is adjacent to the trailhead. Due to frequent high levels of traffic, parking for longer than two hours is not always available at our visitor center lots.

Only use approved firewood!

Help prevent the spread of tree-killing insects by burning only approved firewood, available at all Minnesota State Parks.

Visitor Alert

Open for day use only until May 18, 2020

Reservations for camping, lodging and rental facilities through May 17 will be automatically canceled and refunded in full within 10-14 days. No action is required. Please follow the Governor's extended Stay at Home order and avoid unnecessary travel, including for outdoor recreation. Parks are getting extremely busy every day and it may not be possible to practice good social distancing. Be extra careful in parking areas, around signs and toilets, and on narrow trails, fishing piers and bridges where people tend to cluster. If you see a lot of cars in the parking lot or at the trailhead, turn around and find someplace else for outdoor recreation.

Buy your vehicle permit online. Record your receipt number and place it on your dashboard.

Facilities

The public restrooms at the main Visitor Center/Wayside are still open for use. In addition, there are vault toilets at the Lakeview and Lady Slipper parking lots. All other park buildings are closed until further notice. This includes the Nature Store, information desk and interpretive display areas at the Visitor Center. If you come on the weekend, expect to find large crowds at the Wayside parking lots and on trails to the falls. Traffic is generally lighter at the lakeshore areas (where a park permit is required).
